ARKive (2014 - 2015)
ARKive Gallery (opens a new window)
The ARKive project has given rise to a series montages that highlight human vulnerability and resilience in the face of flooding. The project began with Joanna trawling through hundreds of postcards and photographs of flooded towns and cities across the world, from the early twentieth century onwards. As she looked she began to observe common responses and patterns across time and place. A selection of montages will be shown in the 'Whatever the Weather' Exhbition in RAMM, Exeter from November 2015 to April 2016.
Born of Light and Air (2008 - present)
Both the subjects of this body of work and the methods of expression are Born of Light and Air, as all life on the planet relies on photo+synthesis (= light + combining elements) and light is necessary to see the world and to capture images using photo+graphy (=light+producing images).
"By blending water and minerals from below with sunlight and CO2 from above, green plants link the earth to the sky. We tend to believe that plants grow out of the soil, but in fact most of their substance comes from the air... " (Fritjof Capra)
'Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light.' (George Eastman)
